They are awesome cameras, there is no doubt about it but i would be spending more on some 'L' glass and getting a 1D mkII if I were you, if you have started with canon, it is alot easier to stick with them than to change.

I know matt is going to kill me for saying this, but IMHO Canon does have a bit of an edge over Nikon in the top-top end, the range of glass is better and the 1D MKII, 1Ds, 1D MkII N are all awesome cameras, with the new 1D mkIII on the way you would be nuts to go for Nikon for top end stuff.

I would get some L glass. I am looking at some more canon lenses soon, just so many choices. I am excited biggrin.gif

Went into the city to do a little bit of shooting with the new lens... I thought i'd do a bit of Ronza style stuff.

These are some of the results:

What do you think of them? Is the pp overdone?

well imo, the first one is great but the others seem a little to bright and glary, its a nice effect, but maybe just a bit to much overexposure, the last one is not as interesting as the other compositions, that lens is nuts, i seen a chick with one on a d200 the other day, very nice

i agree with tyson, the first one is done really nice, pp is just perfect. the 2nd one is a great capture but i think is a bit overdone with the pp and the exposure is just a bit to high and the effect is almost lost and doesn't do much for it. The 3rd one personally doesnt grab me at all harry, i think maybe it is that the subject is a bit to 'everyday' i dunno. On the whole though harry i love the shots cause this type of style really grabs me.

the new lense looks like it is working an absolute treat.

The first would be better if the man was alone kind of an isolation feeling if you know what i mean seems a bit busy. The second one it seems too dark in the important part yet to bright in the unimportant areas.

Thanks heaps guys. Great feedback. I'll definatley be re-editing them with less exposure. I completley agree with all ur points, I think that last one needs a stronger focal point, the guy i was shooting is too small with that crop. I wasn't there for long, I really want to go back for a full day shooting there.
I am very happy with the lens... it is about as subtle as an AK-47, so you can guess people's reaction when someone points it at them in the street. I really need to use a prime for this stuff.

Cheers

Good ol' D80 blown highlights.

I see the effect you're going for, but in my opinion they're too over exposed.

Yeah, very Ronza inspired. Just can't please some! First they are too bright, then too dark! lol.
It really wasn't a good day to be shooting. I'll go back when it is overcast or shoot in another location, like a train station (bit more Ronza inspiration for ya!)
I just found this other bloke who's photos i fucking love, he uses a Nikon too!! Although, it is a D2x with some AWESOME glass, like a 135mm f/2, 200mm f/2, 70-200/2.8 VR, 85mm/1.4, 14mm/2.8 etc etc. His name is Paul Vanhoy II: http://www.fotoimpressions.com/pages/photoj_st4.htm

Thanks Brian.

Cheers
Harry

EDIT: Paul Vahoy is a traitor!!! He also has a Canon 1D MkII with an 85mm f/1.2 and 16-35mm f/2.8 as well as a few other awesome bits of glass.

I was walking through the city again a couple of days ago. Thought I'd do a bit of shooting to kill some time. The light was better this time so they (hopefully) arent as blown out.

Harry, I like contrast now, but your loosing alot of detail i think, ie. last set the guys pants have no details, its only minor, but I try and avoid that sorta thing... dunno, maybe the style your going for?

vp_s_wagon
Post #830

Cheers fellas, yeah lance, that is the style I am going for. I know it looses some detail, I'm not too worried about that though, I am trying to create color/contrast appearance that suits the subject and IMO is more effective in conveying a certain mood/theme than the original colors/contrast.
That said, if anyone doesn't like the style I am more than happy for you to say so, in fact i encourage it. I want to make my pics as pleasing as possible for as many people as possible.

DR1F7
Post #831

I like the style, infact love it, wish i could pull it off. But for me, a photo is about detail in the subject... just my thoughts smile.gif

Great shots as usual Harry

Loving Number the angle is very cool and the space around him i'm really digging it and and i'm your pping is really starting to grow on me.

Number two is really cool and a great candid shot but did you capture it without the person walking across? just it seems to distract me a bit but in saying that it may kinda lose the randomness of the shot, undecided.

Well yeah this is my kinda shot the comp. is really good and the small amount of vignetting just sets it off for me. And the arrow draws the eye so well.

vp_s_wagon
Post #835

Cheers Nova and Brian, thanks heaps for the feedback.
I didn't mean to get the person in the shot (#2) but it was very busy and the guy started to get shitty so i buggered off!

Harry

PS: Lance, i tried to edit the middle one to get some detail back but the original is slightly OOF so the lack of sharpness means that the contrast adjustments don't give me any extra details.

vp_s_wagon
Post #836

I re-edited the 1st and 3rd with less contrast and more detail (for Lance).

You like?
