These are the last photos from my trip, these are from my brief stop in sydney to see some rellies. My mum asked me to bring back some shots of my cousins who have been born since last time we were there so I got out the trusty old 50mm f/1.8 and had my first bash at taking photos of a toddler and a 2 month old.

What do you think of my effort?

1. 2. 3. 4.
5.

nice work mate, the 50 1.8 allows for good shooting in natural light which gives far more dramatic results

Harry, for someone who preaches about telling ppl how to take the best shots, and thinking they are tops, frankly that last series of the kid are pretty poor.

But in saying that, I will tell you why.

Shot 1, Poor composition, WAY too much dead unused space.
Shot 2, Incorrect white balance, learn to use the camera's white balance settings.
Shot 3, Passable, but boring
Shot 4, again bad composition. The kid is looking out of the frame, instead of looking into it like he should be, meaning that the whole left side of your frame is a waste of space. Also never cut off a limb at a joint.
Shot 5, probably the nicest compostion, but poor focusing.

Alot of your other photos in my opinion are frankly boring, the ones from OS, a few were crooked, or just snap shots. If you had have thought about the picture, and composed it properly, you could have had stunning shots.

Im not flaming you personally, im just giving your photos a kick up the ass, because i feel they are quite substandard, and have noticed that you feel the need to blast other peoples photos (including mine) even though yours aren't the best in the first place. Get the basics down pat, and learn off other people, and you might make a good photographer one day.

Mike

G8Keeper,
Thankyou for your input, i appreciate it alot. If you at any stage felt like I was simply abusing you or your shots then you are seriously mistaken. Anything I said was purley to help you as a photographer to progress. I thank you for your input into my shots and I have taken it all on board.
Please don't view this as a rebutal, but I might just state a couple of things so that you know what I was trying to do in my shots. I do in fact spend a VERY long time getting my shots right and I can promise you that there was not one "snapshot" in my sets from OS, they may not be prefect or even good, as you suggest, but that is not to say that I have not put in the effort, because you can be damn sure I have.

About this set.
I agree with you on number 1,
number 2: I shot that in RAW and adjusted the WB to be like that on purpose, it was not a slapdash job. I'm sorry you dont like it but the light where the shot was done was blue, it is not the WB doing that.
number 3: i'm sorry you feel that way.
number 4: I'm sorry but the comp in that is fine and the fact that he is not looking into the frame is what I liek about it. It is supposed to be a candid, not a pose. It is natural. I shot @ f/1.8, the arm was ablur in the first place, also it is irrelivant to the focal point so i wasn't too worried about cutting it out.
number 5: It has terrible comp, it should have been cropped more on the right so that more of his direction is shown and less of the path he has taken is shown. I have fixed it now. I am a bit annoyed about the shallow DOF (not focus), It was inside and i was shooting at f/1.8 again.

I have to say, i am quite sick of being shat on by people on this site for doing something that i believe is constructive and helpful... Fuck it. I'll use another site.

Thanks to those who have helped me get this far in my photography, especially people like Lance, Tyler (both of you), Boostmiester, Ronza, mattson, mattyO, Sith, Twist etc. (I know i have missed some, so, thanks)

don't worry about it i like seeing your point of view smile.gif .
but in saying that i don't always agree with it but thats because i think EVERY photographer looks at things differently.

Puzzle Man, In my point of view, if someone says they aren't an expert, they shouldnt preach and make sound like they are an expert or gods gift to photography. I have read quite alot of Harry's post on other peoples photos, and this is the way he comes across to me. But as I said before, I had, and still have no intention of having a go at his personality or anything apart from his pictures.

Harry, I respect that you have taken my quite harsh criticism, and could tell me why certain things were the way they are. I just have 1 problem with one of your statements that I feel i have to clear up. You said the light you were shooting in was blue and it had nothing to do with the WB. The idea of White Balance is to make the Light White. So if your in Blue or Green light, the Fluro WB in your camera will bring it back to being white. The same with like the cloudy setting, because as you should know, when shooting in cloudy or even shady areas, the picture will have a blue cast to it, so the cloudy setting tries to bring it back to white. But in saying that, if you actually wanted the Blue, then good work, it turned out good.

Also one other thing, there is a set of pictures earlier of a taxi? You've got there saying that you were panning it. I've looked at it a couple of times and feel the shutter speed was too fast. the background is not blury enough, I've done a fair bit of drag racing photos, and have found that for something going as slow as a taxi, you want to slow down the shutter by like 2 stops. so say your shooting at F5.6 at 1/500th, you should theoretically change it to like F11 @ 1/125th. I hope you understand what i mean.

And on my last point, I'd just like to say, treat people as you'd like to be treated. As i said before, I have read a fair few of your posts, and no offence, you can act like a right royal knob at times. But anyway, I hope to see you on a proper photography site in the future.

regards
Mike

OK, I've decided to start posting a little bit. But only to people who I know wont crap on me every time I say there is something bad in their photo.
Just to give you an update about where I'm at. I am working as a photographer for a company that does graduations, doing some real estate work and working for an advertising company doing ads for TV/Magazines and Newspapers. They hire me good glass if I need it for a shoot, it is sweet.

here are a few recent shots from the Fremantle arts festival. I thought I would try something different with the colors. I know I have been fairly liberal, it is just a thought though.
I'd love to hear what you think of them.

A few of them seem just a tad overexposed, apart from that you've captured the festivities well. Numbers 2, 3 and the last are my favs. Sharp.

Have some been desaturated? Whatever has been done, I like the ps work you put into it. They look tops. Shots are sharp, what lens?

Good to hear you're making money for shooting! Damn you! biggrin.gif

Cool colour treatment Harry and congrats on the job.

Missed you on MSN today but I like #7. The guy in #3 just spent the last month in Adelaide for Fringe IIRC, reckon I've got a dozen shots of him myself.

Hi Harry,

Good to see you posting and congratulations on the photography work top stuff.
Well here goes my critque firstly i'm not a huge fan of the colour treatment not saying it's not done right but just personal peference(spelling*).
1. Would crop door (or whatever it is) from the right i just find it distracting.
2. My favourite pic of the lot the colour treatment really does suit it and looks good, great angle and the vignetting works really well great pic.
3.I just feel it should be potrait not landscape and could use a bit more DOF looks a bit busy.
4.The crop and of the top of the girls is very tight and there is heaps of foreground just looks funny.
5.Second fav image great use of colour as a focal point and it really works even with lots of stuff in the frame.
6.Nothing to say cool pic.
7.Hate to say it but nothing really interesting happening cool angle but maybe if there was more people or something i dunno.
8.I would crop just above the kid to remove the people in the background and it seems a little bit dark too me.

But anyway i have no idea what you where actually trying to acheive so maybe the things i have mentioned are exactly the way you wanted them to be and my photography is far from good to even give critque but the things are just things i have seen and hopefully it helps a little.

Sorry about the long post.

Thanks everyone, great to get some good feedback like this.
I'll reply in order.
Parko,
Thanks, I was using my p.o.s Sigma 18-200 but i figured out how to get the best out of it using the correct focus settings and techniques. I wanted to o/expose them a bit, I know it's not for everyone but I kinda like it. Yes, they have been desaturated.

Twist,
Cheers man, loving the work, great pay too.

Lance,
Thanks man, the editing is all in RAW, v. high contrast, lots of exposure, shadows and partial desat.

Tyler,
Cheers man, I'll definatley let you know what I think of your next set.

Ronnie,
Yeah that guy was cool, I would love to see some of your shots of him.

Mike,
Yeah, they are all buskers, Thanks for that.

Ghetto,
This is exactly what i wanted, don't think you are 'unworthy' of critisising me or anyone else, you are a more than qualified judge of people's photography. Photos need to be seen my other people because alot of the time you can miss important things because you are so used to concentrating on certain areas.
I agree with all your comments, unfourtunatley I am hugley limited by the lens I was using, with an aperture range of 3.5-6.3 it is very hard to get any shallow DOF, it is also very hard to do close crops because of the huge amount of sharpness you loose. I hadn't noticed those composition issues, I will definatley be more wary next time.
Hopefully with the new lens i'll be able to produce something better.

Cheers
Harry

Thanks everyone,
TD 06, I'll defintley do that. It has been pissing me off.

My car battery fucked itself (it dropped a cell) when i was in a multi-story carpark so i got out my 50mm f/1.8 and did a bit of shooting while I was waiting for a mate with my new battery.

number one is great harry, its done really well. In number 2 the shadow of the girl sought of takes away from the picture because all the lines are running vertical and because the shadow is running horizontal through the frame and is so much darker it ruines it for me. but its not something you could avoid. just something that i noticed.

great 2 shots on the whole though harry. i really love that style of photography
