Hey everyone,

You may remember a while ago I took some pretty average photos with a crappy Kodak I owned. Well after it got stolen I decided to save up for a good camera (I'm only 17 and doing my TEE (HSC), so it took a while). I had a whole lot of Nikon lenses at home from my dad's old 35m SLR so I bought a D50 and had a crack. The new camera is soooo much better. The question is, am I any better?

Tell me what you think of these attempts.

(Again they are numbered so you can refer to them for comments)

Wow, there are some really nice shots there, nicely done mate. The fire is fantastic.

Sadly, yes there is some minor editing. It was only cropping and playing with the brightness and contrast, so nothing too heavy.

I'm Still not that good at using my camera to it's full potential so if anyone could tell me what settings I may need to change in order for my my pics to be better quality that would be great.

The biggest problem I have been having is that the night skys and dark water turn out a bit grainy in some shots. Can anyone tell me why and how to fix it?

Set your images on largest size possible and image quality fine and play around with the exposure time and seehow you go smile.gif

Yeh I do that, The only thing i have found that helps is having a lower ISO setting

I saw the DB9 at a bowling club car park of all places! I just had to take photos of it!
My Freind (Chick)'s Dad is getting a V8 Vantage in a coulpe of months so I will get some good pics of that, I love Astons!!


Anyway I have some updated photos.
I went to the beach this arvo and took some during the sunset.
I also tried framing them, I think it looks better.
Comments and Critiquing welcome.

Whoever owned that DB9 is an idiot! you can see the scratches on the dirty rims already from hitting the curb. I know the owner is a woman, some divorce rich woman by the looks of things. More money than brains.
I mean come on, who buys a DB9 in red!!!

TUN35, The D50 is great, It has a good battery, easy to use, takes good photos (even on auto) and is very good value for money, especially for parts. I prefer it to the Canons, but each to his own.
I bought a wireless remote that works from 10m for $31.00 on ebay and it makes long exposure shots brilliant because there is no shake.
I have some old SLR lenses from 1977 which produce awesome shots on this camera.
Why? are you considering getting one?

smile.gif Yeah trying to decide between the d50 and the canon 350d. I'm leaning towards the d50 due to the price as well as the ease of use tunes.gif

I think your next set of photo's should be sunrise, seeing as you've just done sunset style thumbsup.gif

I was just looking through my old backup file and I ran in to some shots from my last trip to Zimbabwe (I used to live there, dw i am an aussie though!).
They are from 2004 and have some pretty cool stuff, walking with lions, petting baby lions and the most incredible hotel ever! Only prob is that I was using a CRAP camera!
Oh and there is a kinda cool shot of my car.

nice pics mate. the Fire one is great.

If i can give one peice of advise, try not to have your horizons so close to the centre of the image. it looks like there is a crease or 2 seperate images in one. Like in pic 4 of your first post, you could have framed it a tad higher, got a bit less of the pitch black water and more of the sky.

Also, scan around the edges of your view finder before you take the pic t osee if there is any intrusions that you dont want, such as the post in the left corner of Image 6 at the beach.

Hope you dont think im being picky, but its the advise pl tend to give me, hope it helps, and keep practicing mate

G8Keeper, I see what you mean with the water in image 4 of the first set. Cheers.
Image 6 from the beach set was not cropped on purpose, I had tried cropping it but the post gives it more depth. But I know what you mean, I thought it would look better cropped as well.

I'm saving my pennys for a D70 as we speak. I chose the D70 due to its faster shutter speed for action shots (Freestyle Motocross) Will be purchasing 18-70mm & 70-200 or 300mm lens aswell.

Go the D70s - model up from D70 with a few little extra features etc.

I think the 3rd photo could of done with a little more exposure smile.gif Other then that, great shots.

number one does it for me, i really like it

im leaning towards selling my 350d and all my lenses and getting some sought of nikon, something like d70 or d200 would be good but have to wait and see,

Matty B, I'm in perth, most boring place EVER!! (Second to adelaide!) and not too flash for photography,so the bridge in the photos is the Fremantle Traffic Bridge.

Drew 82, Go for the D100, It is soooo much better, the D70's have the same processor as the D50 but the D100 is heaps better!

DJ Brad K, If you want to go down that path then I would go for the D100 like I said to Drew 82.

I have been studying for exams so I havent been outside too much, but I got a couple of shots today during lunch. I also tried some more close up shots.

I found that that last set were pretty good as photos but they have the ability to looks really different with some photoshop filters.
I know this belongs in the Photoshop forum but they are still the same layout as the photos and there has been no warping, just texture changes so I think they should be ok in this post.
