Ok, Let me start by saying iv just changed my diff... anyways, if had a rather nasty noise in my car very hard to discribe... sort of like a grinding noise its worse when changing down gear, and the noise doesnt go away when you put the clutch in, oringaly i thought it might be bearings in the diff as the diff has been rather crapy for a while... so thats why i though it might be diff and changed it. The guy from Lube moible wanted to charge me $2200.00 for them to fix my diff, cant help but wonder how mad i would of been if i paid them for the repair and i didnt even need it? im rather pissed off and not to sure where to go from here im guessing either clutch or gearbox can anyone give me anymore infomation? PS: its an R31 Skyline 5spd |

Well i might have suggested that your syncros might be fuked since you said it was worse when you were changing gears or more likley the clutch might not be engaging/disengaging properly....Forgetting the noise does the car still drive well is the clutch slipping or grabbing roughly??? Strange that the noise doesn't go away when you put the clutch in (oh yeah by the way when you put the clutch in are you stopped or is the car moving???) If the noise doesn't go away when the car is stopped and the clutch is in I would have to say clutch probs.....Does the clutch pedal feel ne different.... |

not the syncros, theres no problems changing gears, just rather noisy on the down shift!, its like at "Shh shh shh shh shh noise", only obviously makes the noise when your moving, not when standing still... however clutch in or out in gear or not... still makes this shh shh shh noise, doesnt seem to be wheel bearings not comming from the wheels its either clutch, or gearbox but what in the gearbox i dont know... |

manuals dont have torque converters and yeah my gearbox blew up a few weeks after it started makin stupid noises i describe it as a supercharer noise it sorta goes on and off round corners like ZZZZ ZZZZZZ ZZZZZZ ZZZZZZ ZZZZZZ ZZZZ yeah that the shit. anywho its your bearings and as i said 1 week later i clean snapped the input shaft and blew up 3 gears. and it wasnt from a hard change it was just going up a slight hill with 2nd gear boost |

ok im 99% sure of what it is, why because it happens to 99% of nissan me5 gearboxes at one stage in their life. i have had this problem. its most likely the thrust race bearing in the front of the gearbox i had have had three of these gearboxs and two of them have had this shot bearing which makes the sound you describe. the bearing was only like $10 so its not bad if you can change it yourself. it also could be the center bearing in the gearbox but they dont have a habbit of causing problems. |
