Legendary 'Marmaduke' comic strip creator Brad Anderson dies aged 91 in Texas

Brad Anderson died Aug. 30 at a hospital in Woodlands

According to his son, Paul, the cartoonist had congestive heart failure

At its peak, the comic strip appeared in more than 600 newspapers in 20 countries

In 2013, Anderson was honored with a lifetime achievement award from the National Cartoonists Society

Brad Anderson, creator of the 'Marmaduke' cartoon strip that for more than 60 years featured the antics of a lovable Great Dane, has died. He was 91.
Anderson passed away on August 30 in a Woodlands, Texas hospital.

His son, Paul Anderson, told the Washington Post that his father had congestive heart failure.

Anderson was born in Jamestown, New York, in 1924, and as a boy expressed an affinity for drawing.

'Brad's interest in cartooning dates back to his early childhood, when he drew popular cartoon characters to amuse himself,' according to his biography on the Universal Uclick website.

He served in the Navy during World War II before graduating from Syracuse University and doing freelance work for magazines, including the Saturday

Evening Post, before creating 'Marmaduke' in 1954.

The comic became a huge success and in 1976, Anderson won the Best Comic Panel award from the National Cartoonists Society.

Anderson's son, Paul, assisted him in later years on the popular comic strip, and a 2010 'Marmaduke' film featured the voice of actor Owen Wilson as the gregarious pooch.

The National Cartoonists Society paid tribute to Anderson in a statement on its website.

'The NCS and the world of cartooning lost one of its true luminaries last week with the passing of Brad Anderson, creator of the comic 'Marmaduke,'' the statement reads.

Anderson is survived by Barbara, his wife of nearly 70 years; four children Christine Potchernick of Montgomery, Texas, Craig Anderson of New York City, Paul Anderson of Flower Mound, Texas, and Mark Anderson of Lakeway, Texas; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

UFC fighter Ronda Rousey has landed her biggest movie role yet in a remake of the 1989 action movie Road House. The project is set up at MGM Studios and she will take on the lead role previously played by Patrick Swayze in the original movie. They are obviously switching things up.

Rousey has not only been on a rising star in the UFC fighting world, but she's also working her way up in the movie business as well. She's had a few little parts in films over the years, but this is her first real lead role.

The story follows a bouncer who is hired to clean up one of the rowdiest, loudest bars in Missouri, The Double Deuce, and protect the town from a corrupt businessman. This is a role that Rousey should easily slip into because there will be a good amount of ass-kicking. This film is a perfecting stepping stone for her to get bigger movie roles (maybe Captain Marvel?)

MGM is currently on the hunt for a screenwriter and director to take on the project, and they are looking to start production next year. According to Variety:

"Rousey thought the idea of starring in a remake was a great idea but wanted to be respectful when pursuing the project. Sources say Rousey recently reached out to Swayze’s widow, Lisa Niemi, to ask for her blessing to star in the remake, which insiders say Niemi gladly gave."
Some of the other upcoming projects that Rousey is going to be a part of includes her biopic My Fight/Your Fight. Then there's The Athena Project set up at Warner Bros., and Peter Berg's action film Mile 22. She's next set to fight Holly Holm on November 14th.

This morning, EW wrote an article about how J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be heading back to Ireland for some last minute reshoots. Since most huge potential blockbuster movies incorporate reshoots into their shooting schedules, this didn't strike me as particularly newsworthy, so I didn't write about it here.

But Lucasfilm has come out stating that EW's original article was factually inaccurate: it's not The Force Awakens that's filming this month in Ireland, it's actually Rian Johnson's Star Wars: Episode VIII that will be getting underway there. That's cool news, since we aren't even sure who is going to be in that movie yet and since Benicio Del Toro (who is likely going to play the villain) recently said it starts filming in March of next year, so this is much earlier. But who will be shooting there? There's a good chance John Boyega's Finn and Daisy Ridley's Rey make it through Awakens alive, but beyond that? We're really not sure. The whole film is shrouded in secrecy so far, and I'm totally cool with that.

We do know that they're going to be filming in the same Ireland location that will be seen in Awakens, a "sharp cluster of rocks rising 715 feet out of the sea" near the ruins of an old monastery, which could be where Luke Skywalker is holed up or perhaps the lair of one of the movie's villains. I'm sure there's some spoilery information online somewhere that will tell you exactly which characters are going to be seen on that set, but I'd rather go into the movie relatively fresh and see it there for myself for the first time.

Episode VIII arrives in theaters on May 26th, 2017, a little more than five months after Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Bourne 5: Matt Damon is back as Jason Bourne in first image from new film



Bourne is back - and the proper one this time - with producer Frank Marshall posting the first photo from the set of the next instalment on Twitter.

Little is known of the plot, but the photo sees an in-shape but bedraggled Bourne binding tape around his hands, presumably in preparation for a fight.

The Bourne trilogy (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum) was a big hit in the early 2000s, before the franchise took a misstep when it introduced a different director and tried to make Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross the protagonist.

NSW Police now have a $450,000 McLaren 650s

The NSW Police’s latest ride.

THINK you can run from the police? Think again. It appears the NSW Police force has just taken delivery of the $450,000 McLaren 650S supercar.

The British supercar was spotted on the back of a tow truck earlier today in Sydney wearing full police livery.

Retailing for just under $450,000 in Australia, the 650S is capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in 2.9 seconds thanks to its 478kW V8 engine.

NSW Police confirmed to news.com.au that the vehicle is in the force as a promotional tool to help raise money for the families of fallen police and comes at no cost to tax payers.

In the past, the NSW Police have had an Audi RS4 and a Porsche Panamera donated to them. With these arrangements the car manufacturer foots all the costs, included servicing and registration, with the police force responsible for only the fuel.

Although, that can sometimes be troublesome. In February last year a NSW Police officer ruined the engine of a limited edition Ford FPV GT by filling it up with the wrong petrol, resulting in a $5000 repair bill.

The 650s will take part in tomorrow’s wall-to-wall ride that is celebrating 100 years of Women in Policing operation. Joining it will be an Aston Martin Vanquish Volante.

While the McLaren will sprint from the lights quicker than any other police car, the title of the country’s most powerful police car still lies with the one off Dick
Johnson tuned Ford GT-F which the NSW Police took delivery of last year. The big supercharged V8 engine under the bonnet packs a whopping 600kW of power, 150kW more than a Ford V8 Supercar.

While unlike the McLaren, the fast Ford works as fully functional highway patrol car.

Here is your first look at Ciara Renee as Hawkgirl, a.k.a. Kendra Saunders, and Falk Hentschel Hawkman, a.k.a. Carter Hall. Hall is an Egyptian Prince who reincarnates throughout time along with his soulmate, who happens to be Saunders. The heroes access their powers through the Hawk God, Horus, which transforms them into the Hawk warriors. The two characters have a cool look to them that perfectly fits with the rest of the DC TV universe.

When talking about the show with Variety, executive producer Greg Berlanti compared it to westerns and classic heist movies saying,

“For us, first and foremost, with all [our shows], it’s about ‘how is it its own thing?’ Because we don’t just want to do it to do it. I compare the shows to old Westerns; we have a lot of lone gunmen and sheriffs in town, and this one is very much an ode to things like ‘The Magnificent Seven’ or those great heist pics like ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ where you get all of those colors at the same time, and a true ensemble, and that was the fun of it… You want that Rat Pack-y kind of vibe of all this crew hanging out, as disparate and as different as they are.”
The series also stars The Flash's Wentworth Miller (Leonard Snart/Captain Cold), Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory/Heat Wave) and Victor Garber (Dr. Martin Stein/one-half of Firestorm). Also signed on are Arrow's Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/The Atom and Franz Drameh as Jay Jackson.

HOW THE MOB INTRODUCED AMERICANS TO ORAL SEX

If you’ve ever Googled “the history of the blow job,” you’ve no doubt encountered a slew of things, including perhaps a visit from HR. But depending on how willing you are to go down on your list of search results, there’s a juicy bit of oral history you may not have uncovered: the role that the mob played in popularizing the act, or perhaps we should say repopularizing it. From The Godfather to Deep Throat, which was bankrolled by the Colombo crime family, the world of organized crime had a major hand in bringing the blow job — taboo for centuries — back into the American mainstream in the early 1970s.

Though it seems hard to believe today, with surveys suggesting that two-thirds of American youth have engaged in oral sex, there was a time when the act Salon once labeled “the new joystick of teen sexuality” was not so widespread. Nor is fellatio (from the Latin “to suck”) a recent invention, as the racy frescoes at Pompeii and the chapter in the Kama Sutra devoted to “oral congress” attest. But, as Thaddeus Russell recounts in A Renegade History of the United States, oral sex was almost universally condemned as a sin from its earliest beginnings, and it really never made it off the brothel menu and into polite American society until well into the 20th century.

Then came an offer we couldn’t refuse.
In fact, even after thousands of U.S. soldiers discovered fumer le cigare while serving in Europe during World War II, the inaptly named “blow job” — possibly originating from the Victorian “below job,” or from jazz slang for playing an instrument — would not enter the American lexicon until the 1940s, where it largely referred, as in Andy Warhol’s Blow Job (1964), to a forbidden homosexual act. Eventually, of course, the move made its way into heterosexual bedrooms across the country, where it remained in the shadows of social stigma, not to mention on the wrong side of the law. “As of 1950,” Russell reminds us, “fellatio — even when practiced by a married couple — was a felony in all 48 states.”

Then came an offer we couldn’t refuse. Mario Puzo’s classic novel The Godfather was published in 1969, and it made an indelible impact on American cultural life. The mobster replaced the cowboy in the popular imagination, people started talking about horse heads and “Godfather tucks” (you’ll have to Google that one), and blow jobs were, as the late Christopher Hitchens once observed in his memorable essay “As American as Apple Pie,” “suddenly for real men.” Hitchens singles out this key passage from The Godfather about mob-connected crooner Johnny Fontane:

And the other guys were always talking about blow jobs … and he really didn’t enjoy that stuff so much … He and his second wife had finally not got along, because she preferred the old sixty-nine too much to a point where she didn’t want anything else and he had to fight to stick it in. She began making fun of him and calling him a square and the word got around that he made love like a kid.

Suddenly the blow job was a hetero man’s game, even if did not suit emasculated entertainers like Fontane. And, almost as if they had decided to strike while the iron was hot, members of New York’s Colombo crime family bankrolled Deep Throat, a pornographic film shot over several days in January 1972. Though its star, Linda Lovelace, would later claim she was forced by her abusive husband to perform the deeds that would make her famous, the 61-minute film became a national sensation — and even more of a household name once the title was used to identify Woodward and Bernstein’s secret Watergate source.

And just as “Deep Throat” helped take down one U.S. president, the blow job would contribute to impeaching another, and along the way enter the American bloodstream as never before. Hitchens also recounts the embarrassment felt by his friend, English journalist David Aaronovitch, while “in the same room as his young daughter when the TV blared the news that the president of the United States had received oral sex in an Oval Office vestibule.”
