i've just had a brief look at the legislation, it's a can of worms to try and understand, crouched in so much legal jargon that it's difficult to decipher what the actual fcuk you're reading.

go consult QLD transport or your engineer would be my recommendation.

i'm happy to stand by what i've said, but opinions differ. ask 6 different people and you're going to get 6 different opinions.

dunno.gif

That,in a nutshell,is what I was trying to get across.I agree with you on the legality of using a racing harness for general road use,but the rest is an unknown quantity, all we know is that we have a 1972 vehicle,we don't know its current status or what state he resides in and he probably won't come back to enlighten us

Reading this morning, that there is talk of withdrawing the Australian Ambassador in protest...over reaction much!

In other news, the rain has started down here,(Ballina has had 35mm overnight),and we have storms and heavy rain forecast for the next four days (as do you guys),which is going to be fun for me,as I have to run the wife up to Cooly Airport in the morning.Second hand chainsaw time again Alpha hsdance.gif

Yep,not being smart, not arguingI've already indicated that I'm looking cross eyed at the racing harness,it's just that you have now bought rear seat belts into the equation.....can you see how this thing is already is heading off course, because he could be just talking about a Malvern Star

Sorry for the late reply guys, didn't think I'd get a response so quick.
I was a bit vague before but I'll make myself a bit clearer. I live in NSW and the car is a 1972 chevelle. The guy I'm buying it off (in TN, USA) has put some aftermarket bucket seats in with a 5pt harness with a single button release. The seats are properly installed on rails and are reclinable (not fixed racing seats). I asked if he still had the original seat but he said it was broken and beyond repair so he has put these seats in. I think you're right about having the stock seat belts installed as well but just for the time being whilst I try and source/afford a new original style front seat for the car I was wondering if it was at all possible to register in it's current state. It's not a shitty job but NSW road laws aren't the greatest so I'm not very optimistic

You received a quick response, because you posted here, and we're a bunch of good blokes,if you posted in General, you would probably get more helpful answers, but now it looks like you're stuck with us.I have done a bit of poking around,re five point harnesses, and it looks like you will have to have 'approved' seat belts fitted, this is the main reason cited
QUOTE
Why would wearing a 5-point be worse than a 3-point? I don't understand.

The theory here i think (Im not saying i agree with it, but this is the theory) that a 5 point harness really holds you in place. Therefore in a crash your body stays pinned into the seat, meaning your head gets "snapped" forward.

A 3 point harness typically has Pretensioners to pin you in the seat, but then Load Limiters "peel" back during an accident which increasing the stopping time (therefore reducing peak g force).

Normally if your going to wear a 5 point harness you try to use a HANS device which then holds your head in place. However you want to be careful using a HANS device as you really need a certified race seat (which keeps the seat belts over your shoulders) a proper harness setup and a roll cage. I have heard (not sure if true?) a few stories of necks being broken in roll over crashes as the roof caves in and your head is stuck upright. Without a HANS device you could be bent over out of the way without damaging your neck.

That said, i think in the majority of cases being properly fastened can only be a good thing.
..

Ironic part is you can a baby seat in the back, with a five point restraint, and it's legal dunno.gif

Looking at the work involved importing a LHD vehicle to NSW,and getting it registered,I would suggest touch base with an engineer, because you have things like lights to be approved, etc.Looking at those seats, and the fact that they are on runners he may just approve them, and issue you with a mod plate.A quick perusal of the RMS website re registering it,it looks like it meets all the criteria, apart from the restraints. Will you be using it as a daily,or more club orientated,as it would appear from what I have read, they can be more lenient with club registration.I'll put the RMS link here, but you have probably read it a million times

the seats will require to have been tested to meet ADR requirements / crash test and have a tag on them to show such, which they almost certainly won't have being the car's from the U.S.A. Caveat - if the seats conform to meet American standards and are tagged then an engineer may pass them - but that's me 'guessing/assuming', in theorising that. the rail modification will be assessed by an engineer, and i'm still going to say, you'll need to have the stock original belt installed - but the same may go for that as could the seats.

But, all that being said and done, since you're going to require to have an engineer look at the vehicle, see what he says.

Thanks for the info! I understand what you're saying about the car crash and how being in a 5pt harness could do serious damage. As I don't have the car yet I can't really tell you right now how it's all been setup but as you said it would still need engineering. It was only going to be weekend sort of car (definitely not a daily) but from what I've researched club rego in nsw is very strict on how often you can drive it so maybe it will go on normal rego. Just another question who is certified to inspect and approve/disapprove the seats and seat belts? As in who are the engineers that can do this. Is it just a certified mechanic?

Happy,Happy,Joy,Joy,the BOM has just issued a flood warning for us unsure.gif

QUOTE
Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales
FLOOD WATCH FOR THE NEW SOUTH WALES COASTAL VALLEYS FROM THE QUEENSLAND BORDER TO TAREE FOR THIS FRIDAY AND SATURDAY

Issued at 11:52 am EST on Wednesday 29 April 2015

##

Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding along all rivers and creeks within a nominated valley and is NOT a Flood Warning [see note below].

Onshore winds and rain will increase as a trough deepens off the northern NSW coast on Thursday and Friday. Another East Coast Low is expected to form within this trough on Saturday near the QLD border before moving south to be offshore of the Mid North Coast on Sunday. The northern half of the coast (Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers) will receive the heaviest rain with multi-day falls of 150-200mm, locally 350+mm from Wednesday night to Saturday. Friday and Saturday will see the heaviest widespread falls.

At this stage there is a greater than 70% chance of flooding in the following river valleys developing during Friday and Saturday:

1. Tweed River valley - moderate to major flooding

2. Brunswick River valley - moderate to major flooding

3. Richmond and Wilsons River valley - moderate to major flooding

4. Clarence River Valley, including the Orara River - minor to moderate flooding

5. Coffs Harbour - minor to moderate flooding

There was much debate today at work, a good article in the courier mail.

As someone who has seen the demise of people with addiction to drugs, as well as knowing the paramedics and police that have to deal with it, I'm with the why the fk did they drag it out so long opinion.

As public concern and sympathy reached an all-time high in the lead-up to their execution by firing squad, the far-reaching consequences of their original crime of co-ordinating a drug trafficking ring have been seemingly forgotten.

Yet had their heroin smuggling operation continued uninterrupted, it would almost certainly have contributed to the loss of countless lives and left a trail of devastation.

Sadly, this reality has been largely swept under the carpet as Australians become collectively lost in a sea of emotion and sympathy where the perpetrators have been hailed as the victims.

The first is the barbaric nature of death by firing squad, which is largely undisputed in the Western world.

The second issue is the seriousness of the crime that was committed. If we abhor drug use and its effect upon young lives and society, as we rightly should, then we must equally abhor those who orchestrate it. Australians seem quick to forget that Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were not just drug mules, but alleged co-ringleaders in the heroin smuggling operation between Indonesia and Australia.

While by all accounts it appears that they have recognised the error of their ways while in prison, we are at risk of negating the seriousness of their crime if we make that our focus. To do so is like a slap in the face for families who have been torn apart by the scourge of drugs.

In Indonesia, drug dealers are viewed as mass murderers, perhaps not without adequate justification.

There are two very separate issues involved in the public outcry surrounding the death sentencing of Sukumaran and Chan. The death penalty remains a barbaric and outdated facet of any judicial system, and like countless other Australians I had hoped and prayed that the decision was overturned by the Indonesian Government and that the two had been instead required to serve a life sentence. But amid our public sympathy for their plight, we must not forget the devastating implications of a crime such as theirs.

Before we lose ourselves too completely in the emotion and morality surrounding their execution, we must surely pay some mind to the thousands of lives that are lost each year worldwide due to drug use, and the insurmountable heartache that this brings to the loved ones who are left behind

They are only reformed because they knew the end was coming,my thoughts exactly Shuff & VK.

quoted everybody to respond in saying........

it's been interesting to view the coverage, and what's been said and has come out in the media over the last few days as things intensified building towards the executions.

coverage that i watched last night summed up the appeal process that they're were trying to use to delay the executions, in saying that there were two instances of interference / corruption in the trial process where the prosecutor was asking for 130 thousand dollars for a reduced sentence from the originally intentioned 20 years that they were to receive, for the sentence to be reduced to 15 years if the 'bribe' were payed by their families. however someone (political figure / or someone in the attorney generals office) decided that they should receive the death penalty instead, and that the 'bribe' payable would reduce this sentence.

as was said, there is now no incentive for those cases to go ahead, for witness to give evidence, and that by carrying out the executions that the Indonesian government has removed two witnesses that would have highlighted the corrupt practices that these families knew was going on behind the scenes.

imo, the executions should never have gone ahead whilst there were outstanding legal matters to be heard that could have altered the outcome. it's a failure of process that they could have occurred whilst these appeals were outstanding.

it's not the first time that i've heard of allegations of corruption inside the Indonesian government. it was also reported that if the Indonesian police actually did their jobs of arresting people instead of accepting bribes and looking the other way then this so called 'drug crisis' wouldn't exist. i've heard plenty of tales of drugs being readily available @ Bali.

i'm not against the death penalty, i just don't believe that the political stance of no mercy for drug crimes / drugs emergency is a just process, or takes into account that people do change and that reform is possible. Joko's stance has effectively given every convicted drug criminal in Indonesia no incentive to even bother trying to better themselves and not be exactly what he portrays a drug criminal to be.

Crazy-Efficient Rotary Engine Lands Million-Dollar DARPA Contract
The LiquidPiston motor could be used in killer UAVs—and lawn mowers

We love when a tiny company does big things.

LiquidPiston, Inc., of Bloomfield, CT, recently signed an agreement with the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, better known as DARPA, to use the hyper-efficient rotary engine technology for military purposes. The advanced combustion tech could be used in weaponized UAVs, robotic soldiers, and generators that produce 3kW of electric power—but fit in a backpack.

Father-and-son team Nikolay and Alec Shkolnik say LiquidPiston can dramatically downsize combustion engines used in military scenarios. The Shkolniks say that their motor can be adapted to use only Jet Propellant 8 (JP-8), the fuel favored by the U.S. military, to produce power in a small, quiet, and efficient package.

"A diesel generator that's the size of a desk and weighs 300 pounds becomes a 2-foot-square engine that generates the same power," Alec Shkolnik tells Popular Mechanics.

A typical 3kW gasoline-powered generator—the type used at construction sites and as a stop-gap during power outages—weighs about 140 pounds and measures about 3 feet long, 2 feet high, and 2 feet wide. The military uses such generators in remote areas, but they are ungainly beasts. Shkolnik says LiquidPiston's equally powerful generator using JP-8 would weigh about 30 pounds (the motor itself would weigh just 8 pounds) and fit in a backpack. Used in drones, the LiquidPiston engine could be small enough to fit inside the envelope of the fuselage.

"We see a lot of potential military uses, including robotics," Shkolnik says. "We're going to work with DARPA to make hardware improvements to our motors, and model them for scenarios where full-size combustion engines could be replaced."

DARPA Project Manager Mark Gustafson, who has led high-profile projects for the military such as the $6 billion propulsion system for the F-35, sees great promise in the LiquidPiston technology.

USED IN [MILITARY] DRONES, THE LIQUIDPISTON ENGINE COULD BE SMALL ENOUGH TO FIT INSIDE THE ENVELOPE
"The nation would benefit greatly from the development of a high-power-density, energy-efficient engine that could operate on heavy hydrocarbon fuels," he tells PM. "We are excited about the plans to develop and test key technologies that could help achieve that goal, and look forward to LiquidPiston's efforts to accelerate progress in this important field of work."

LiquidPiston emerged in 2003, when the Shkolniks invented the high-efficiency hybrid cycle, or HEHC, a motor based on a four-stroke thermodynamic cycle. The men named the company LiquidPiston because they had initially planned to use liquid-piston technology similar to that found on the Humphrey pump. Used in large-scale water-supply projects in the early 20th century, the pump operated by compressing a mixture of flammable gas and air with a cylinder of water. But no LiquidPiston engine, including its current Mini X, has ever used an actual liquid piston.

In addition to its collaboration with DARPA, the company plans to market power tools for home use, such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, and string trimmers. These products will be on shelves at your local Home Depot and Lowe's two or three years from now, Alec Shkolnik says.
