I would love to be on the money I am now working a Monday-Friday job to be home every night. It is possible, just need to gain more experience in the field I am though.

I will look at doing consulting in the future though. Big $$$ plus home nearly every night = win. However higher workload and stressors aswel.

The roster I work now is pretty good and workload can be high and stressful at times but then at other times. I look for more work to do so I get out on the rig floor and give a hand.

There are still plenty of jobs where you can start at the bottom and make your way up... plenty of big companies around like Supercheap Auto, Woolworths, McDonalds and what not...

And before you go "Well shit, I don't want to be a check out monkey" keep in mind that many of the employee's in those big companies that are now in management positions had started down the bottom at the checkouts.

You just have to be willing to start and see it through...

But then there's the "cheat" way of getting higher up the chain by jumping jobs... I did that for years... worked for one place for a year or two, built up my experience and expertise, and used that to get a better higher paying job, then couple years later, do the same again, and again, and again...

I started on $500 a week in one job(Landscaping), got an opportunity 4 months in to show my work ethic with a concreting company my friend/at the time house mate worked for. Started on $580 a week there, one month in $750 a week, another month and a half $850, four months after that $1000 a week. Fifteen months in now and on $1,800.

Still would rather give this up for a regular 9-5 Brisbane job paying atleast(Bare minimum) $800 a week after tax. Although I've been thinking a lot and I think I've come to terms with what I want to do and how I'm going to achieve it.

Luckily I haven't had to blow or rely on my fcuking skills to get one. Pretty much as McLeod said below, started at the bottom (storeman) and made my way through the ranks.





We have had a number of employees through our doors that have only lasted a year or two max before moving on, being a small industry everyone hears everyone's movements so you get to know who is doing the rounds. Seems to be two types of people that do this, those with a good skill set who are shopping themselves around for more $$$ & then there are the people that maybe aren't as skilled as what they have made out on their Resume or interview and leave before too many people cotton on to the fact they have NFI what they are doing. We have had our fair share of the latter.

My point was that there's a "culture" of young Australian's who prefer to be on the dole than to get out there and do "whatever it takes" to earn money until a better job can be found.

I know that I could instantly find a job delivering pizza's if I was ever in a bind and needed money fast... personally I don't think I'd ever be on the dole... couldn't bare the thought of being that useless.

Unfortunately I won't work for peanuts. I've spent the past 3 months driving day in and day out to the valley for work in peak hours, so excuse me for being sick of f'king driving in traffic!

I was getting roughly 600 in the hand at week's end after tax, 200 of which would be spent on fuel and tolls for the week. Which left me 400 a week, which isn't something to be sneezed at but certainly not worth the hassle and bullshit this company had.

Ah fair taxi and pizza delivery are two of the things I wouldn't do however when out of work I did apply for Maccas, KFC etc and no luck, current job I jumped on it without even asking the pay.. after first shift I was like so what do i even get paid here i never thought to ask

I've already applied to Maccas, HJ's et al. And was pretty much told fcuk no too old lol. And I wouldn't have a snowballs chance in hell at any "driving" type jobs due to my driving record.

Seems strange, I have noticed over the years that Maccas seem to hiring a lot more "mature" aged staff.

From being in that position(dole) and where I am now, I can honestly say I feel the same way. It was a choice I didn't want to make, I was happy not doing shit with my life, wasting it day in day out, getting fuel money from friends with no licences to drive them around etc, odd $20-50 from parents to keep me going. Thats when I landed myself in all that shit/trouble and it was either Get on the dole and legal aid would support me or simply have no solicitor and go to jail for a long time. My mother signed me up after continually telling her not to.

Honestly though, if it wasn't for that point in my life, I would never be where I am today. That shit has changed me, it scared the shit out of me having the words "You're under arrest for murder" at the age of 18. To this day four years later I still think of my actions and most of the time it breaks me down.

The only reason I'm expecting $800 bare minimum after tax is because I simply can't afford to go lower, with my car etc and I'd much rather not sell my car I just bought.. But I'm working a way around it, just need rain to keep away and get on them 6 day weeks and I'll be fine.

Edit: on the job thing, I've always tried to work as close to my chosen field as possible, shit jobs for not much pay fixing computers building networks bloody printers. Money on the start up jobs wasn't a whole bunch but built a fairly useful skill set that now, even though thats not my job, lets me fix shit that goes wrong. Makes you a lot less disposable when you're the only one who knows how the network is held together, fixing the servers when they go down ect. Sure not really programming but it makes it easier for a small company to employ me over someone who refuses to touch hardware and can't install an operating system (they exist, quite common).

TLDR: Do whatever shit job you can that is somewhat close to the field you want to end up in, even if the money is less than you'd earn in retail.

Job I'd recommend, if you can find it, that you don't need any qualifications for but looks not bad on your resume... Switchboard operator. Sit around in an office during office hours answering phones and directing calls, easy as batshit all you need is good phone manner and a decent memory for numbers (they all have cheat sheets, really easy to learn as you go actually) one of the easiest jobs I've ever done and taught me how to properly answer a phone and talk to people on that thing in a completely professional manner. Looks good on your resume as people look at it and laugh, you can then recite verbatim your phone answering message in your phone voice and they start ticking over in their brains that its actually a fairly useful skill.

Required knowledge: English language and how to operate a phone. There is no formal qualification and you don't really want to do it for years on end but as a job working through uni I'd really recommend it above stacking shelves if you can find an opening. Added bonus, anyone with a switchboard in their office is likely not to want to employ someone from an ESL background so less competition than in other entry level jobs.

Same really applies for other phone related jobs, more companies are moving those jobs on shore since they get too many complaints when outsourcing overseas. Just don't get stuck cold calling people, wife did that, was absolutely shithouse and she came home at the end of the day exhausted and pissed off because of the constant stream of abuse. Still any port in a storm, even cold calling looks better than stacking shelves.

At the moment the only thing i've got is concreting.. As I said earlier I was happy doing fcuk all with my life. First job was 3 days before 18th birthday.. lasted 3 months before i lost my license. Kicked around being a lazy good for nothing, until i got in shit. After incarceration etc I started working for a friends landscaping crew mid 2011 for like 4 months and now been concreting for the last 15 months.
