Bought this about 2 years ago. Spent a fair bit of time ad money to fix it up and get it up to roadworthy standard. Ever since then it's been a very reliable and dependable car. These cars are quite handy with a large cargo area, decent fuel economy and dual range 4x4. They are very light for a 4x4 and I'm told they are very capable on a beach where there light weight enables them to float over the sand and are more capable off road (a lift kit might be a good idea though) than may people would think. Unfortunately I never got around to testing this out for myself. Basically what you're getting here is an extremely cheap, reliable car that can do the daily grind and then on the weekend take you camping on a beach up the coast. I don't know of a cheaper model of car that has the same capabilities.
Body and paint are in pretty good condition for age with minimal rust that I can see though the decals have peeled somewhat.
Interior: The seats and mats are pretty good though the top of the door padding has been affected by the sun quite badly. Very large cargo area (has certainly come in handy). Has an Alpine stereo but the head unit has stopped working. If you can fix this or replace the head unit you will have a decent little system because Alpine make great car speakers. Left door lock is missing or more accurately somewhere in the door cavity. Aircon works reasonably well but isn't freezing.
Engine is very strong and has been well maintained in my ownership. Have serviced it every 5,000km's although it is currently 7 or 8,000km's since the last service. About once or twice a month it will develop lifter noise which disappears after a day or 2. This is very common with these engines and does not harm the engine in any way. It also has an oil leak (not serious) which is another thing very common with these engines - try and fine one without a leak! Recently it has become temperamental on startup and you have to have it well and truly warmed up or it will splutter. I'm guessing either the carburetor needs a good clean (Subaru's Upper Engine Cleaner might do the trick) or possibly needs a new fuel filter. But again the engine is very strong and should last another 100,000km's with proper maintenance.
The gearbox is very sloppy and just needs some bushes (cheap) to locate the
gearstick properly which is an easy fix. 3rd gear can be notchy (wearing synchro perhaps?) but as long as you don't rush it it's absolutely fine and hasn't gotten worse in my ownership.
Under braking there is some shudder through the brake pedal and steering which I believe is due to slight warped front discs. It's not at a dangerous level though may need to be replaced for a roadworthy.
Tires and suspension are good. Has upgraded 14" wheels.
What has been fixed or replaced:
- Sports exhaust with sports cat (sounds great) - K&N Sports Air Filter - Right and left hand rocker cover gaskets - Front strut mounts - Rust in the rear wheel wells - Battery - Front CV drive shaft - Front discs - Engine and accessories belt plus relevant seals and gaskets for that job - Tires - I think there were a few other suspension pieces replaced
Has rego until March but you will need to get your own roadworthy. I'd fix the niggling problems up myself but simply don't have the time.
Looking for a very quick sale as am going overseas. Located in Toowong, Brisbane.
