Hey all,

A car I'd looked into awhile had a killswitch in it where by you'd put your finger on a screw (to ground) then you could start your car.

Now i'm just wondering is it as simple as connecting ground wire from starter to an inconspicious screw then bob's your uncle? or is there more to it.

I don't really know shit about electrics but i'll have a crack at it anyway. If you run an earth wire to a screw, that I presume would be attached to the car, it would aready be grounded and touching it with your finger would have no effect. However if your considering having this wire attached to a screw that is floating in the air (I don't understand the point of having a screw but i'll play :S) could potentially be earthed by touching it to the body of the car or with your finger.

As mentioned above I don't have much of an understanding of electrics and thought that should be clarified before asking if the starter would even have an earth wire running off of it? I would have thought that since the starter is mounted to the engine and the engine to the chassis/subframe, wouldn't this already be earthed?

off the top of my head, i would think that grabbing hold of the ground from the starter could give you a fair wack

more to it than that. those are capacitive immobilisers. if you are looking at that idea use a cig lighter,relay and a diode.. (and no I will not tell you how to set it up. google it.)

Starter is earthed directly to the block, which will generally have at least one earth feed going back to the chassis or directly to the negative terminal of the battery (which also is a good wire to upgrade to reduce voltage drop to your starter motor).
There is a -lot- more wizardry involved than earthing the starter.

oh dear GOD!

NO!

The way those immobilisers work (extending on what Chris said) is they cut the feed to the started solenoid in the same sense a typical immobiliser would.

Rather than an alarm triggering the relay to cut the circuit, it uses a capacitance circuit to trigger a very low resistance trigger.

At no time does 12v or anything remotely along those lines travel along your finger laugh.gif

Id run a relay with bat+ to 30, 87 to start, 86 to ign and 85 to bat- via some kind of micro switch under the carpet. :-)

What your talking about I Think is called 'AEON' security system. It needs like 0.0whatever of a volt which travels from the key to the said screw through your body. If your not touching the screw then no start.

Simple capacitance switch circuit, you can charge people anything you like if they don't know how it works!

Considering making one of these after reading this thread, seems like a top idea.

Don't do it! I currently have one of these touch screw immobilisers in my car and it is the biggest nightmare i have ever had. I am trying to currently find the stupid wires to remove it and put a better immobiliser in. These screw immobilisers short out and cause other issues with other electrics in your car. They suck.
