Hey guys,
Just wondering - in a brand new turbo - is there meant to be a little bit of play? When I say a little - I'm talking like 1-2mm max! Or is the shaft meant to be rock solid and you can't move it (laterally) at all?

Just trying to work out if it's a dodgy turbo or if this is perfectly normal.

2mm is quite a fair bit.. if u can move the shaft and it touches the housing or there are scratchy marks on the housing... then yer... it wont last too long

My new Garrett T04R turbo here has no shaft play, in and out and side to side.

A teeeeeeeeeeeeeny tiny bit of *side to side* shaft play (less than 1mm) is acceptable.............ANY *front to back* shaftplay is NOT acceptable.

If it's a new turbo & it's got shaft play....take it back & claim warranty.

Doesn't sound too good. 2mm in any direction is like puting your wheel nuts on the first 2 threads.
IF your looking to buy, don't, unless its stupidly cheep. If you have, sorry, i hope you didn't pay much

any turbo should have shaft play, when the engine is off the oil passage is dry that would normal lubricate the shaft / core, hence why it moves slightly

yes, i agree... most garrett turbos use oil to self-centre the shaft, so a very small amount of movement is evident when the oil is not filling the space around the shaft.. but we are talking between 1mm and less. If the shaft is rock solid and wont move even the slightest bit, then it is probably jammed.

Just check that the shaft will not move in or out (end float) because that is BAD.. check the housing near the comp wheel for scratches and have the wastegate pressurised if you can, to see that it works properly.

Hope that helps! thumbsup.gif

What turbo have you got, any specs?

Use the following as a guide (Garrett BB)

Maximum shaft end play (thrust) (back and forth) should be 0.20 mm (play should NOT be noticeable using your fingertips) while shaft radial play should be no more than 0.56 mm (very noticeable sideways movement using your fingertips).

Try putting some oil in it and see if the movement is decreased if it’s outside of tolerances.

It isn't one of the those dodgy turbos that are going around.

With or without oil, for a brand spanking new turbo to have any play is wrong ohmy.gif , return it before u even bolt it to save da hassel taking it out again and also so the ppl that u got it from know it hasnt been used. I've just bought a Gt-4 half cut thats done a tad over 100k on it and its turbo still has no shaft play....yet laugh.gif

Yeah mate, it shud be ok. If it's oil cooled and lubricated core, than there shud be a bit of play cause thee is no oil in there obviously
