Post #1 post 9th September 2010 - 02:45 PM
So i decided i was going to try something a little different, as the title states, Matte Black

Not much to tell really, i've been spending my hours after work for the last few weeks, progressively wrapping my 34 in Matte black vinyl.
Im using an Avery 900 series for anyone interested.

Its been a long process so far, and a steep learning curve as i work with vinyl on a daily basis, but haven't ever attempted wrapping anything on this scale.

Been trying to keep taking photos as i go.

Originally posted this up on SAU but thought id share it else where as well

Some work on the finer details...

Work on the Front bar, this part was a biatch, not fun at all, and i was not fully satisfied at this stage
Several hours later this is how she looked

Having the front bar done really made a huge difference to the look of the car

Now the rear bar, car is nearly complete at this stage, with the only thing remaining being the bootlid getting the centre tail light welded and re-sprayed, then the vinyl will go on

Again this was a tough one, and doing it in winter made it that much more difficult, as the vinyl gets increasingly hard to work with in cold conditions, next time ill be doing all of the work in the garage with heaters to keep the temp in check

Always undecided on matte black. Something I think it looks tuff other times it just looks cheap and nasty. As long as your happpy though.

Looks pretty cool, especially because it doesn't have the inconsistency in paint that most matt can jobs end up with.

Cheers dude,
There is actually still a fair way to go for my own personal liking, in the door jams and small nooks and crannies, mostly since i've gone from white to black which means any small bits of white can be seen through

Shit mate I think it's awesome! It really looks a lot better than a matte black paint job imo. I'd NEVER be able to do something like that.

EVO, the uk mag vinyl wrapped their R35 GTR in midnight purple, looked hot.

I would defiantly look into this if I wanted a colour change.

It is a great option for a color change,
Im already planning to do more cars, (not necessarily in matte black, but even in gloss colors)

What's more, if you get tired of it, it can be removed quite easily and your original paint is un-harmed underneath, that is of course if you had decent paint to begin with, if you are applying this over crappy peeling paint, expect that its going to peel some off with the vinyl as you remove it.

How much did it cost you to supply the wrap?

It has a strong adhesive but you can simply peel it off with a little elbow grease and patience

How tough is the vinyl in terms of cleaning it and its resistance to rock chips/shopping trolley dents?

Do you have to be real careful to avoid damaging it?

You have literally taken the idea out of my head and put it into real life, i love you for this! lol

My plan for about a year now has been to buy a r34 When i get off my P's, make it matt black, and i also want to use vinyl (for this benefits of easily removing it, keeping the original paint job brand new etc etc)
But as im sure we have all had an amazing idea, that just doesnt turn out to be so amazing in real life, so i wasnt quite sure about it, but now that I can see a real life reference, my/your idea is awesome, looks awesome and i'll definately be doing it now (sorry not copying you or anything )

As said above it obviously needs the right wheels to complete this thing, which im sure you are getting to, so good luck with that choice because it could really set the car off nicely with the right rims.

If you dont mind me asking, how much did it cost you to do this?

Thanks for all of the compliments guys,

Firstly with regards to taking care of it, it gets dirty real quick as most black cars do, only matte black shows it a lot more, that said aome water and a cloth or mitt will clean it up in no time at all, i carry a bottle of meguires quick detailer in the car at all times lol

Secondly, it can tear quite easily if you bump it with something rough or sharp but at the end of the day i think anyone who cares about their paint enough shouldn't have a problem with avoiding doing any damage to it

Now to price.
I spent around $800-900 in vinyl alone, its not a quick process so labour is the killer so if you want something like this done, budget at least 3k
Also bear in mind though that u can go many different colors and is also completely reversible.
