After 7 months of blood, sweat, skinned knuckles, late nights, early mornings, numerous parts and tools strength tested against concrete floors and brick walls and budget blow outs I can now say it’s all completed.

My idea was to show as much attention to detail to both the engine and engine bay as I could, using all genuine Holden LS1 parts where I could, and to make it look more pleasing to the eye but still be 100% street legal. The only non genuine Holden factory parts on it from a VX SS are the following;-

Water pump (Needed to use the U.S.A. first LS1 made water pump as it has a removable main pulley so it could be electroplated)
Radiator (Used a VT series I V8 one as it’s identical and is pressurised so alleviates the need for the surge tank)
All Pullies (Most are plastic and can not be electroplated so bought new ones with removable bearing etc)
Air box & Filter (Purchased from Power Torque Q.L.D.)

The block, heads, rocker covers, manifold, sump and all ancillaries are painted including oil filter, reservoirs, coils, injectors etc. Every single external nut, bolt, bracket, pulley are electroplated including K-Frame, sway bar, control arms, fuel rail, sump guard, injector clips, brake master and brake booster etc. ABS and throttle body are all highly polished as to the air conditioning metal components. Headers are ceramic coated.

The battery has been relocated to the boot, the PCM to the glove box. Since a VT series I V8 radiator was used the surge tank was able to be removed as the VT radiator is pressurised to 15psi and is identical to the VX one in all measurements and specifications. A VX ECOTEC V6 overflow bottle was fitted in the factory position right behind the left hand head light and is not visible. A power torque O.T.R.C.A.I. system is used and the factory baffle made to fit using a jigsaw to cut around the O.T.R.C.A.I. system and cover the radiator components. The only custom modifications needed were to do a throttle body bypass and purchase a new heater hose due to the new radiator.

Pacemaker 1 & ¾ inch 4-1 headers ceramic coated are fitted, as to a single 3.5” mild steel exhaust system made by Sureflo Exhausts in Sydney. Power Torque performed a MAFless tune. Engine made 226rwkw before MAFless, and 250rwkw after MAFless tune.

The engine bay is still not complete. I will be fitting braided lines to all pipes etc, the engine will be removed in April and all holes, and seems will be filled in/seem welded and repainted as the undercarriage will be torn down and car placed on a rotisserie as the same attention to detail will be performed on the undercarriage.

If you have any questions or need help etc in doing this yourself to your ride I'm only to happy to pass on some help etc. smile.gif

Pictures are not the best quality sorry my piccy taking skills leave a lot to be desired. If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything at all! I worked my backside off on this and it soaked up some serious dollars. You don't like it that's fine, but there is no need to make bad comments unless constructive criticisim.

Ok the "before shots" (well of my mates LS1 the grubby pig tongue.gif )

Rick..........looks awesome mate! But just one thing.....it isn't 100% legal.......and here is the constructive critism.......that isnt actually from ME

Before I posted I thought I would show the pics to one of the D.O.T guys who was here looking at some *ahem* other cars......and he admired all the work you have put into it.........BUT........warned of several defectable items.....

He was concerned about your new radiator set up, and even thou i think you say it IS a GM unit, it still ISNT ADR'd to that car........therefore is classed as a minor modification.

The air intake isnt Factrory fitted, therefore a defectable unit. Unless you have a mod plate from an engineer to approve it's safety.

He was VERY adament your biggest problem was the fact you have removed the plastic shroud from the cover of the motor (rocker covers etc......the bid garish thing holden put on there), he said that would be the first thing he would write you a ticket for.

That was what he said at a brief glance........and this guy has been a D.O.T offical for over 10 years.

On a different note, he really thought it looked excellent as do I, congrats on all that hard work........but his final words was :
dont kid yourself thinking it is 100% legal.

That is unreal rick, it really shows all the work you have put into the vehicle! I just hope you get the credit you deserve smile.gif

Already ahead of you Chris

N.S.W. R.T.A. Engineers certificate issued for airbox and radiator and over flow bottle

When I drive it I always have the twin style HSV engine covers over it, take them off at shows and put them on before driving away.

Had it inspected on Friday by the RTA and approved RTA engineer smile.gif

looks great.

Little info needed on the OTRCAI.

What performance gain have you seen ?
Have any problems with the carbra ?
Where did you get it from ?
Are you still running stock TB ?

Thanks

Ok Nath here goes

I went there with my stock engine just been rebuilt and it only had about 60km on it as it went straight from Armstrong Holden at the Gabba to Power Torque at Brendale. The most I had ever gotten out of my stocko before the rebuild was 224rwkw. Mark dyno'd it straight away when I arrived and we got 226rwkw. Not bad considering the sticking hot heat as it was a bloody hot day!

After he fitted the O.T.R.C.A.I. and did the HP Tuners MAFless tune it made 250rwkw and 600lb of torque (see the dyno sheet)
So I made a good 24rwkw with MAFless tune and airbox! Mark was over the moon as he said he only gets that much power once in a blue moon as they are normally around the 230-240 mark. Yes my TB is stock and all I've done is polished it on the outside. I can't tell you how much the new air box adds power wise but at a guess I'd say a good 5-10kw.

Carbra, nope no problems at all, not once! Best investment you can make to protect your car.

Carbra came from Carbra Australia which you can see here

Troy, I'm sure you suffer from Alzihmerz or similar, you and I have been through this before. The old engine is long gone after the block split near the back right bore and this engine is purely stock.

Ahh thanks for the info.

Interesting to see how you went to HP Tuners.. any real reason for that ?

So i presume the OTRCAI was purchased from Power Torque ?

king of the concrete jungle
Post #19

Yep sure is! HP Tuners is far superior in all aspects over LS1 Edit. You can modify far more with it, in half the time and it's designed and developed right here in Australia. You can buy the HP Tuners actual program for your car for about $850 and share it with a friend if they have the same model and transmission and use one of those hand help devices and do your own fine tuning if you like. You being a PC wizz it would suit you perfectly smile.gif

Yes I bought the O.T.R.C.A.I. from PT for $600 including air K&N air filter. It takes about $10min if that to install and remove the old air box.

It sounds a little deeper and more of a decent roar from the front. I'm happy with it and can't fault it as yet. I've put the front shroud plate back on now to which isn't in the pics tho. I simply used a jigsaw and cut it out around the mouth of it so it looks factory fitted.
